Beautiful rock music filled with meditative rhythms, emotional pleas, and a realization that musical notes and textures are as much about God's glory as the meaning of their words. Something Like Silas' sound is sonically huge and layered with tweaked out noises and vocal harmonies. This five piece band functions great as a whole, but the stadium sized guitar work makes for some explosive rock and roll, and the female vocal adds a unique element to their style.
We recently had the opportunity to chat with Something Like Silas and got to learn more about them....
MQ:Where do you go to find inspiration?
Malina: A lot of our songs just come out of what we're talking about with our friends...with what the churches are struggling with.
John: Typically, what will happen is...we'll all individually come up some ideas, whether it's just messing around on guitar, or we've seen something...we come up with an idea and we bring it to the table - to the band, then the band gets their hands on it and they interact with it. Then maybe we'll take that away and individually we'll come up with more specific music ideas, go back, and then Eric will take it and work on melodies or record it and work on lyrical ideas and stuff like that.
MQ: Do any of you have a musical family? Any musical influences growing up?
John: Eric and Malina and Lenny all have a classical background. I have a little bit of schooling. Generally though, most of our music is inspired by a lot of Brit and European music - a lot of independent L.A. bands and things like that. But we love really raw folk music...really intimate music. We love a broad diversity of music.
Nick: Such as?
John: Such as Simon and Garfunkel...
MQ: ...we got that on tape!
