"I've had a world of possibilities slip through my hands, and prayers that went unanswered that I couldn't understand. There's a faith that can move mountains but I never let it move me - I only trusted things that I could see. So much frustration and trying it alone, I've had the revelation I can't make it on my own."

Avalon - 'All'

Music Quotient

MQ: Do you see any difference between secular music and Christian music...maybe production wise?

Jody: I don't think there is a difference anymore.

Melissa: Especially now.

Jody: Yeah, I think when we first started ten years ago...you flipped through the channels on the radio and there would be a pop station next to a Christian station...there was a definite difference in the tone and sound.

Avalon and the message that makes Christian music different

Melissa: It was just like 15 years behind, you know? But now I feel everything has caught up...but it's the message. I think there are great vocals, great production, and great tracks and all those things, but I think the message behind the music is what makes the difference.

MQ: On your current album (The Creed), do you have any favorite songs? If so...why?

Jody: Oh yeah...well, who doesn't have a favorite song...everyone's like 'Well, my new album is really my favorite!'

Melissa: ...but it is!

Jody: It is...

all: laughing

Jody: ...and we have several. I think my favorite is a song that I had a chance to sing on. The great thing about it is it's the first song I've ever done with Avalon that when I sit and listen to it ... I don't even think about the fact that I'm singing it. Avalon discuss their favorite songsI'm not thinking that 'Ooh, that note was flat'...the message of the song is so strong. It's called 'You Were There' and it talks about how God throughout history has proven Himself time and time again to be faithful. With David and Goliath, with Abraham and Isaac and how at the last minute He blessed, honored his faithfulness and brought a lamb to sacrifice. And obviously how His death on the cross was the ultimate sacrifice and the ultimate proof of His faithfulness to us. It moves me every night and some nights I'm choking back emotion to try to get the song out. It's just been an amazing experience for me to do that.

Melissa: My favorite is 'The Creed.' It's the title track and it just talks about the simplicity of faith but it makes a bold statement which unfortunately not a lot of people do and we really wanted to make that statement. It's gone over so well at our concerts because people long to make that statement with us and it's just, you know, what we believe in, pure and simple: that God is our father, Jesus His Son, that He died on the cross for our sins and He was resurrected and soon we'll be with Him again as a Christian - but standing up for our faith, it's neat to be able to make that bold statement.

MQ: Can you talk a little bit about the song 'All'...?

Melissa: Sure, the song 'All' was one of the last songs that we chose for the record. It sort of came in on the end of everything when we were searching for a song to finish out the record. It's turned out to be one of our favorites because it's just a fun song but has such a great message that so many of us as Christians go along in our walk for so long before we finally realize that 'You know what, God's way is the best way.' There's a great line in it that says, 'I finally learned to listen to the call, so Lord I give you my all.' It's about surrendering everything to Him because He's done so much for us. That's, at least, what He deserves back.
