Dirty Faith: Becoming the Hands and Feet of Jesus

Dirty Faith: ...

Music Quotient

Have you ever feared that your mission there would be met with unrest from the culture?

Mark: Well, there's political unrest right now in Haiti, especially in Port-au-Prince - the capital city. In fact, we can't drive from the airport to Jacmel which is on the southern coast of Haiti. It's only about 60 miles, but we can't get through one part of the city...

Is it because of Christianity...?

Mark: No, it's because you have money - you're an American and they're trying to make noise. So, we have to fly into Jacmel with Mission Aviation Fellowship. But once you are in the area where you are doing your work, the people there respect what you are doing for the orphan children of that community. Also we're going to have a health care clinic there and also a food program. The community respects you and the need for you is so great, that you're protected mainly by the people. Right now in Haiti, there's not a lot of police, there's not a lot of military. So, it's kind of like a 'free for all.' But as long as you are doing good work for the people, they protect you. You feel very safe while you are there. It takes a while to build some respect, but once you get in there and start working with the people, working side by side, and doing programs for the community, that means a lot to them and they'll protect you. Audio Adrenaline helping to build orphanges in HaitiEven more than that, they'll know you're for real - the Gospel becomes more real to them - when they see it played out in a real way, rather than just showing up and passing out tracts or something. It's cool - you'd love going there - it's a great thing. And that's probably already too much talk about Haiti (laugh), but I'm very passionate about it. The record comes out August 30. We've put together a tour that we're real excited about for the Fall. It's called the 'Until My Heart Caves In' - the Festival. There are six bands on it and we're trying to keep ticket prices very low for our fans. It's going to have a band called 'Kids in the Way' - a great live band on Flicker records. A band called 'Day of Fire' that have had a lot of radio success - great live, great ministry. Sanctus Real which I'm sure all of you all know about. They're a great live band too. Superchick - who's new record is really hot, they've got the number one song single on CHR. And Pillar who is also on Flicker. They're just an incredible live band. And Audio Adrenaline - so six bands will go out to support the record and probably raise some money for the Hands and Feet project, we'll see what we can do. But that will go out in September. So, it's going to be a big Fall for us with the record release in August. I think we play 'Night of Joy' and then we go onto one of those music boat cruises - which I'm not sure if I'm going to enjoy that or not (laugh). Then we go on tour until Thanksgiving, so it's going to be a really cool Fall for us. We're excited. We're excited about the album too. It's a very rock-n-roll album. If you've seen the tour, 'Clap Your Hands' - the first song - is probably going to be the opening song on the record - and it slams pretty hard - it's a very intense song. But there are some great radio singles and rock stuff. It's a very guitar, rock-oriented record which is going to be cool for us. I think this record is - probably since 'Bloom' - the first record that feels like we do live. It captures a lot of energy. The producer, Jay Joyce, has been very good at that. He's also been great to work with Tyler on guitars - and I think Tyler is an excellent guitar player - but this guy has a ton of great ideas. He's just melodically and rhythmically a genious. It's been really cool to work with him. He's a real cool guy. You know, the theme of the record - we were kind of in the state we were right after we made some kind of zombie. At different times in your career you're wondering, 'Are we still relevant? Are we still supposed to be doing this?' We haven't put out a record in two years. You're doing shows, but you're still playing old songs. These things start to slip up on you and sneak into your head like, 'Can we still pull this off?' You start to go through these little valleys. Audio Adrenaline faithful to what God has called them to doThis record was written in a valley. That's kind of what happened when Underdog came out - and that's the reason Underdog was written - the whole theme of the album. 'Until My Heart Caves In' is kind of about where we are. It's like, "God I will do this - what You called me to do - until my body falls apart. Whatever it is You want me to do, I'll do it until my body falls apart." That's kind of where the mentality of the band is and what the record thematically means to us. We're here to do Your thing - and we want to do it with passion until we fall apart. That's the theme of the record. I think it's going to ring true at a really deep level because it comes from a guttural reality of where we are as a band. So, hopefullly it'll connect with people that are going through similar situations - even in their faith, maybe not career-wise or whatever, maybe it's in their families or whatever they're walking through at the time. But just to give people hope to not give up on what God has for them in their lives.
