Music Quotient

Mark: At concerts, yeah, there are people there with cell phones. The other day, we were playing stick ball in the parking lot (laugh) of an arena with some of the guys from Toby's (Toby Mac) group, Kutless, and Hawk Nelson - who are on the tour we're on - and we got together for a group picture and every kid was taking pictures with his cell phone. That was pretty remarkable. "Man, every kid here has a camera on their phone, this is insane!" Some people were doing videos on their phones. I think its definitely changed for us as far as our website makes us more connected to our fans. Audio Adrenaline talks about moblogs, technologyWe have a fulltime employee that just does our internet site. He's not a 'web guy', but he does content for us. So, we're constantly updating our content on our website - talking about the Hands and Feet project or talking about the new record. We do a moblog from our cellphones. We do videos from our cellphones and send them in immediately to our website - where our fans can watch us in the studio just off of our cellphones. It's changed quite a bit how we communicate with our fans, and our street team. Kids know what's happening. Fans know what's going on every day of our lives - pretty much. Where it used to, they might hear from us once a year in an email or way back in the day it wasn't even that! (laugh) You know what's also changed in our lives - cell phones in general. When we first started touring, our band would break up just about once a week because we were fighting over a pay phone - in a truck stop. You know, "Who's going to get to call their wife tonight?" So technology has definitely, we tour differently than we did ten years ago.

Audio Adrenaline Hands and Feet Project

What do you attribute your longevity as a band to?

Mark: Well, I think we like each other. That helps.

All: laughing

Mark: We do fight a lot, but I really think that Audio Adrenaline is here- and was even started - as something bigger than our visions, and bigger than our music. Even when I step back from Audio Adrenaline and look at it, I realize it's bigger than just making records, you know? For me, it's about how God is changing people's lives through this thing called Audio Adrenaline. Even our lives have been changed by it. Not to get too sentimental, but I think just God's had a plan for it. Audio Adrenaline God keeps us togetherSometimes I'd like to kill some of the guys in the band - I'd like to choke them! (laugh) But I feel like God keeps us together, because He has something to say through us still. We're one of the "Christian" bands that's still a Christian band, you know? And still around. It's not that we embrace that title or we hate it, it's just that we write what we sing about. I think God blesses that. One of things that I talked about earlier, some people I think - in their music - tend to not be themselves. And I think that drives them to the point of, "I'm not happy in my own skin. I'm not happy in the skin of this band and I want to change that." But we tend to write, perform, and sing about the things that we want to sing about. Whether it's about a relationship with my wife, or family. Or if it's about what's happening between me and God - I'm going to write about it. Criticisms come and go, but if you're true to yourself and you're making music that you feel like God wants you to make, things just kind of bounce off of you because you're doing what God wants you to do. I think that's probably one of the biggest reasons we've been around for that long. The arrows don't penetrate because you're being true to who you are.

You guys have been together for about 12 years...

Mark: Actually it's about 14 - but 12 is cool, you can put that.

All: laughing

- any reflections on that, on how far you've come, and how you see your impact in ministry?

Mark: Obviously, it's cool to hear from fans and to hear their stories about how our records or concerts have affected them. I think one of the coolest things now is to have a band like Relient K - who toured with us in the fall - to say "The only reason we're on tour with you guys" - 'cause they don't really want to be in the 'Christian Band' thing. And they went on tour with THE icon Christian band, you know? We're like THE Christian band. But they were like, "We're doing music because of Audio Adrenaline". Matt Thiessen was like, "The 'Bloom' record is the reason I'm doing this - the reason I play music." Audio Adrenaline talks about Relient K, and other young bandsThat's one of the most encouraging things for us now - is to see a generation of kids coming up that are going farther than we ever even dreamed about going, that were inspired by a show or concert that we were involved in. That's pretty cool, you know? In your 'golden years' or whatever you want to call them (laugh) - that's a perk I guess - to see some of these really talented people. Even Bart from Mercy Me - we go way back. He came to see us before 'Bloom' came out. He opened a show with us in '94 and we've been friends ever since. Just to see all of these younger bands come up and do cool things and know that you were a part of their encouragement and their upbringing in Christian music. I think that's cool.
