Indian Creek - Indian Creek runs in front of our cabin, and we go fishing there often, though we never seem to catch anything, which is a good thing because we wouldn't know what to do with what we caught anyway. But somehow, in that still, quiet place, God catches us and opens our eyes to see Him all around us.
Faithful One - As the last song written for the album, "Faithful One" came as an answer to all of the transition and change in our lives. We're so forgetful and fickle that it's a good thing we're relying on His faithfulness and not our own.
I Will Walk - Micah asks, "With what shall I come before the Lord burnt offerings? A thousand rams? My firstborn? The fruit of my body?" To this day, we complicate our faith with all kinds of trendy works. "What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God."
Smiled on Me - Most of our time is spent traveling around in our Dodge Ram Diesel pick-up truck. We wrote this song with our friend and producer Michael Aukofer as a celebration of this life that we get to live on the road, and we used the bits of wisdom we learned from people (and a parrot) that we've met along the way.
Oh Love- While flipping through a hymnal, Mandee found, "O Love That Will Not Let Me Go," and she read the words to us. Carrie plucked out the melody on the piano, and we found that though the music was a little dated, the words were still as relevant and true as the day they were written. And we needed them.
Emmanuel - Christmas is traditionally a time for us to enjoy all the gifts of family and friends. But maybe when Jesus came to earth, He was most excited about getting to the lonely, needy ones of us who have been waiting for something to change. "Emmanuel" means "God with us." We are not alone anymore.
Broken Down - People ask us, "So you're from East Tennessee, do you have a refrigerator on your front porch?" We say, " Well, maybe." We've actually decided that it's a pretty smart idea - put all your broken stuff out on the porch, and just maybe someone will come by and fix it. And maybe we shouldn't stop there but put the broken things in our heart out, so when the Healer comes through town, He'll know to stop by. When Jesus was here on earth, people went even further - they carried the sick into the marketplaces or wherever He was. "And all who touched Him were healed."
Runaway Heart - I think that most of us who grew up in church have no trouble seeing the splinters in everyone else's eyes, but we don't know what to do with the log in our own, or even how it got there. This song is not about forsaking God in a single, big mistake, but about the series of small decisions, like choosing not to love our brother, that lead us away from the heart of God. Compassion comes when we realize that our wandering hearts are all the same, and they all need to find their way home.
Hike to Maine - We live four miles from the Appalachin Trail, which is a footpath that extends from Georgia to Maine and crosses our road at Iron Mountain Gap. When we're home, we spend lots of time on a small section of it, running, hiking and walking the dog. But some people hike the entire trail in a few months - seems pretty impossible, but then, life does too, sometimes.
Always - We grew up on a heritage of hymns, and they grounded us in vivid images of our faith. "Always" was an attempt to reach back to them with one hand while hanging on to the present with the other. The result was something like a prayer.
My Family - Mandee wrote "My Family" last summer for a group of high school students who took us in, cared for us and fed us when we felt like, "the least of these." We're so thankful for the amazing support system that the Father provides us - in the strangers that become our long, lost friends and in our friends that become our family and in our families that continues to make us rich in their love for us.
